Let me tell you about another summer nuisance, flies! I’m not wearing this Ultra Shield fly mask just cuz it’s stylish for horses, but because it helps protect my face from flies that bite like that ugly horse fly. They usually come out during the day when the sun is high and hot. Both horse flies and stable flies suck blood, so they can be painful when they attack me so let’s stop them!
Fly control using insecticides such as foggers will help decrease the number of adult flies, but will not solve the problem at the source, which is the area where flies breed. Places like moist straw, spilled feed and hay. Also wet spots from water or urine can be ideal. Please clean my barn and corrals at least once a week to break the fly life cycle. Remove the manure and other organic material and either composite it, or spread it thinly over a different area so that the sun will dry it out and kill the larvae.
There are other ways to help control flies. From screens on my barn and stall, fans blowing air out of my area to wasps that eat flies. My veterinarian at Herd Health Management has lots of ideas that can help make my home be more comfortable in these hot times! Give them a call at 480-899-5088 and help me enjoy the monsoon season!
